Amazon's Studio Microphones best-seller list is topped by two very different mics: the Marantz MPM-1000 (XLR) and the Blue Yeti (USB). Which one you should buy depends on one question — do you want to own an audio interface?
USB, four pickup patterns, headphone monitoring on the body. Nothing else to buy. Its weaknesses are physical: it is heavy, it hears the desk, and the stock stand puts it too far from your mouth. A $20 boom arm fixes most of that.
An XLR condenser with a surprisingly clean sound for the price. But XLR means you also need an interface with 48 V phantom power — budget another $50–$100. The upside: when you upgrade later, the interface and the cables stay.
| Your situation | Pick |
|---|---|
| First mic, no interface, want it working tonight | Blue Yeti |
| Already own an interface or mixer | Marantz MPM-1000 |
| Recording in a noisy, untreated room | Either — but get closer and use a pop filter |
| Channel uses AI voices only | Neither — spend it on storage |
Whichever you pick, record a 30-second test in your actual room before you buy anything else. The room matters more than the microphone.
